When Pauline Quirke MBE and her husband Steve opened the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts in 2007, they wanted to help young people realise their full potential, through the many skills learnt in their unique variety of tuition. Today, with over 200 sessions in more than 150 locations, we’re proud that this ethos continues to be central to the skills taught at PQA every weekend.
All of our amazing students have something unique to share, and it’s our job to bring out the best in each of them. From the moment your child steps through the door of one of our academies, we teach performing arts skills that boost their confidence, encourage them explore their creativity, all in a warm and welcoming environment. Developing these important life skills can help contribute towards a child’s physical and mental wellbeing.
Building confidence, along with a desire to develop performing skills, is often one of the most frequent reasons children come to PQA. Learning and practicing performing arts in a safe and encouraging environment can help young people build self-belief, and we see this over and over again in our academies. Whether it’s practicing routines or performing in front of fellow students, family and friends, our students learn to have a go and try new things. We understand that this can be challenging for some children, but we take the time to support and nurture them, allowing their confidence to blossom naturally.
During their time with PQA, students have the opportunity to take to the stage, in showcases, local performances and even in London’s West End. It’s truly amazing to see our students experience the thrill and buzz of performing, with the knowledge that they have built up the skills to achieve amazing things both on and off the stage.
Here at PQA we see that creativity can have a positive impact on mental health in many ways. Being creative can:
Whether learning a dance routine, acting in a play, or pitching a film idea, our students are given the chance to use their imaginations and express themselves however they may wish, to encourage them to have faith in what they are capable of. A unique way in which we nurture creativity is through our Film & Television module. Students are guided in all aspects of film-making, from casting and script work, directing, operating cameras and sound equipment, as well as acting for the screen.
There are very few industries that rely on teamwork as much as the performing arts. Students learn how to work within a group and interact with others in a caring and respectful way. Sharing a common goal, working collectively and having fun together, as one, is a hugely beneficial experience. Whether it’s through rehearsing, performing, or filming, the performing arts allow young people to connect with others who share the same passions. By working together with their peers, students will form strong bonds, deepen their empathy, and develop compassion for the world around them.
Here at PQA, we believe that the performing arts can have a hugely positive impact on the lives of future generations. By nurturing these skills, our students will benefit in all walks of life and into adulthood. We’d love to welcome your children along to learn and grow with us.
