I recently had the privilege of attending one of PQA’s in-house agency, Quirky Kidz, casting days in Bristol. It was a day filled with talent, professionalism, and incredible performances. Watching young performers from different academies come together and thrive in a casting day environment was nothing short of inspiring. It was also a great excuse for me to remind myself of everything I learnt during my Drama GCSE 15 years ago!
One of the standout moments of the day was witnessing children from academies from completely different parts of the South West interacting with one another like they had been friends and co-stars for years. Within minutes of meeting, they were bouncing off each other, running lines, and offering support like seasoned professionals. Whether that was encouraging their partner when they forgot a line, or giving them the biggest round of applause after watching each other sing, to see that level of collaboration and instant camaraderie in a group of young performers was heartwarming. A true testament to the nurturing environment PQA fosters.
Another unforgettable highlight was seeing our SEND students step into their characters and come alive during their script reads. The transformation was astonishing; the moment they started singing or speaking their lines, any nerves or apprehension melted away. Their confidence and joy in performing were infectious, reminding us all why inclusion and accessibility in the arts are so vital.
We were also lucky to see some of our returning clients in action, and it was clear that they had honed their skills not only as performers but also in navigating the world of being represented by an acting agency. Watching them engage with the agents, conduct themselves with confidence, and present themselves with poise demonstrated how valuable these experiences are in preparing young actors for real industry opportunities.
Of course, no casting day would be complete without those natural comedians who had us in stitches. Their quick wit and effortless banter filled the room with laughter and lightened the atmosphere, making the day even more enjoyable. It’s amazing to see such raw comedic talent emerge so naturally, with some students delivering punchlines with the timing of seasoned stand-ups.
A huge thank you must go to the Quirky Kidz agents, Jodie & Phoebe, and the incredible teams from PQA Bristol and PQA Wells. Their professionalism and dedication were evident throughout the day as they kept the children engaged, entertained, and relaxed between auditions. Their support was invaluable in ensuring the young performers felt at ease, helping them put their best foot forward in front of the agents.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was seeing the growth in confidence of so many children, especially those who arrived feeling nervous. For some, this was their first experience of casting for kids, and the initial anxiety was palpable. However, the moment they picked up their scripts and started reading, something shifted. You could see them finding their footing, relaxing into their roles, and ultimately embracing the experience with enthusiasm.
Then there were those who exuded self-belief from the outset. Even in an environment that would make most people’s nerves skyrocket, they carried themselves with such poise and assurance. Whether they were delivering lines, answering questions, or simply just greeting us as they walked into the audition room, they exuded confidence beyond their years.
It was also impressive to see how well-rehearsed so many of the children were. Their dedication to preparation was evident, and it paid off in their performances. Many delivered their lines with a natural ease that can only come from practice, commitment, and a deep love for performing.
Beyond the performances, the day was filled with an incredible array of personalities. Some children were quietly confident, allowing their talent to speak for itself, while others thrived in showing off their individuality – whether that meant twirling in a tutu, clutching a beloved teddy, or proudly displaying their unique outfits and hairstyles. It was a beautiful reminder that at PQA, we celebrate every child’s uniqueness, and there is space for everyone to shine in their own way.
For those students wondering how to become a child or teen actor, opportunities like these are invaluable. Taking part in these sorts of events helps young performers build confidence and resilience needed to succeed in the industry.
By the end of the day, it was clear that every child, no matter their level of experience, walked away having gained something – whether it was new friendships, increased confidence, or valuable insight into the casting process. Witnessing their growth and seeing their excitement reaffirmed the importance of creating opportunities like these, where young performers can thrive, learn, and take meaningful steps toward their dreams!
It was a pleasure to work alongside Quirky Kidz and gain an insight into what they do. Despite only working 10 metres away from me in the Marketing Department (and Jodie and Phoebe also being my closest friends!), I really enjoyed seeing them in action. It was a real proud friend moment, not to mention, how fabulous it is to see Girl Power in action!
